SERMON – The Presentation of Christ in the Temple – C

The main theme of this week’s readings during Epiphany is the revelation of Jesus’ identity and mission as he is presented and dedicated in the temple.

Malachi 3:1-4: This passage speaks of the coming of the Lord to His temple, where He will purify and refine His people like a refiner’s fire and a launderer’s soap. It emphasizes the need for purification and preparation for the Lord’s arrival. Application: We can apply this by seeking spiritual purification and renewal in our lives. This means examining our hearts, repenting of our sins, and striving to live in a way that honors God. By doing so, we prepare ourselves to receive and reflect Jesus’ presence in our lives.

Hebrews 2:14-18: This passage highlights Jesus’ humanity and His role as our High Priest. It emphasizes that Jesus shared in our humanity to defeat the power of death and to help those who are tempted. It also underscores His ability to empathize with our struggles.

Application: We can take comfort in knowing that Jesus understands our struggles and is always there to help us. This encourages us to turn to Him in times of need and to trust in His strength and guidance. Additionally, we can strive to show empathy and support to others, following Jesus’ example.

Luke 2:22-40: This passage recounts the presentation of Jesus in the temple, where Simeon and Anna recognize Him as the Messiah. Simeon declares that Jesus is a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel. Anna speaks about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. Application: We can apply this by recognizing and proclaiming Jesus as the light of the world. This means sharing the good news of His salvation with others and living in a way that reflects His love and grace. We can also find hope and encouragement in knowing that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises.
